Proposal 1 is dangerous for renters! 

At worst, EL Proposal 1 would overturn the rental regulations that keep renters safe and protect their health and welfare. These current regulations:

• Prevent unscrupulous landlords from cramming tenants into unsafe spaces.

• Require landlords to maintain rental properties according to strict safety codes.

• Allow the City to inspect rental properties and require landlords to quickly fix violations.

At best, EL Proposal 1 would create a loophole allowing unsafe spaces to be rented without rental licenses and without inspections. The property owner just couldn’t charge traditional rent for leasing the space—that’s the loophole. As renters know, safety inspections are important to keep tenants safe. 

We want East Lansing to be a safe and welcoming community for residents of all ages and walks of life. If renters aren’t safe, we all lose. 

On November 5, protect safety and vote NO on Proposal 1!
